A Cataract is a thickening of the natural lens inside the eye which prompts a decline in vision. It is the most common condition leading to declining vision and the cataract is eventually treated with surgery.
Cataracts occur normally through ageing. However there are numerous other reasons a cataract can occur such as: diabetes, trauma, radiation, genetics and some medications. Over time, a yellow-tan colour is deposited on the lens and together with a disturbance of the lens filaments, decreases the transmission of light and prompts visual issues.
The signs and symptoms of a cataract developing can vary from patient to patient and the type of cataract. Those with nuclear sclerotic or brunescent cataracts will notice a reduction in their vision. Those who have a posterior subcapsular cataract will usually notice glare as a major symptom.
